Steam's full-screen mode for TVs and controllers — the ten-foot interface that later became the basis for the Steam Deck.
When Valve set out in 2012 to move Steam off the desk and onto the couch, the client needed an interface you could drive from across the room. Big Picture Mode offered large targets, text legible at TV distance, and full controller navigation — a so-called ten-foot UI, named for the viewing distance.
The mode was the opening move in a living-room push that also produced SteamOS and the Steam Machines, a hardware line that flopped. The idea survived anyway: when the Steam Deck arrived in 2022, its interface built on a reworked Big Picture, and in 2023 the new design replaced the original mode outright. A rare case of a failed product leaving behind the interface that won.
