The third name on the differential power analysis paper — the one that showed a smart card's power draw is a leak.
Jun, Paul Kocher and Joshua Jaffe presented "Differential Power Analysis" at CRYPTO 1999. A crypto chip draws slightly different current depending on the bits it is working on, and with enough measurements the key drops out of the statistics. The algorithms were as sound as ever; it was the implementation doing the talking.
At Cryptography Research, Jun went on to work on countermeasures and hardware security for payment cards and other smart cards, where the attacker holds the device in their own hand and has all the time in the world to measure it. Differential power analysis is now a standard item in every security-chip certification.
