Bankgirot

Web På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-30

The Swedish banks' shared clearing house, which since 1959 has made sure a payment from one bank actually reaches another.

The banks set it up to compete with Postgirot, the state-run giro that had had a head start since 1925. The idea was a number that points to an account, so a company could print it on its payment slips without revealing the account itself. The bankgiro number survives and still sits at the bottom of most Swedish invoices, next to an OCR reference.

Behind the scenes Bankgirot clears account transfers, direct debits (Autogiro) and supplier payments between banks, while the money itself settles in the Riksbank's RIX. The real-time payment system that Swish runs on was built by Bankgirot and went live in 2012. An attempt to replace the whole thing with a shared Nordic platform, P27, was shelved in 2023 after years of delays.
