ASCIImation
Animation made purely from ASCII characters, frame by frame, with no colour or block graphics.
Where ANSI animation relies on escape sequences and colour, ASCIImation makes do with what fits in plain text: each frame is a small piece of ASCII art, and motion comes from swapping frames in time. That makes it work in any terminal at all.
The best-known example is Simon Jansen's Star Wars ASCIImation, begun in 1997, which retells the entire first film in characters — a project he kept at for years. It travelled far beyond its web page via a telnet server at towel.blinkenlights.nl that streamed the film straight into your terminal. For a lot of people it was the first time telnet did anything other than log them in somewhere.
