The company whose boxes sit inside ISP networks and see DDoS attacks coming before the customers notice anything.
Arbor spun out of DARPA-funded research at the University of Michigan in 2000, on spotting anomalies in very large networks. Its flagship, Peakflow, read NetFlow from carrier routers, learned what normal traffic looked like and raised the alarm when that picture broke. Paired with filtering and BGP FlowSpec, it became the default DDoS tool inside service-provider networks, and a large share of the world's bigger ISPs bought it.
Danaher acquired Arbor through Tektronix in 2010, and it moved again when NetScout bought Danaher's communications business in 2015. Arbor's annual infrastructure security report and ATLAS data became the industry's reference for how big attacks really were — numbers competitors were happy to quote in their own sales decks.
