Antoon Bosselaers

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-17

Belgian cryptographer at KU Leuven and the third, usually forgotten, name behind RIPEMD-160.

Bosselaers worked in the COSIC group in Leuven and took part in the EU's RIPE project around 1990, which produced the original RIPEMD, a hash function in the MD4 family. When Hans Dobbertin found weaknesses in both MD4 and the first RIPEMD, Bosselaers, Dobbertin and Bart Preneel designed the strengthened RIPEMD-160 in 1996.

He was the one in the trio who cared most about speed, and wrote several papers on fast software implementations of the MD4 family. RIPEMD-160 never matched SHA-1's reach, but it survives in Bitcoin addresses, where it hashes a SHA-256 hash. That makes it one of the few 1990s European hash functions still being computed billions of times a day.
