ANSI X9.17

Security På svenska → Updated: 2026-10-13

A 1985 banking standard for key management whose random generator was built on triple DES.

ANSI X9.17 was a 1985 standard for key management in financial institutions. It also described a pseudorandom generator built on triple DES, used to produce keys and seeds, and it became a reference for later designs. Implementations still refer to it as the ANSI X9.17 PRNG.

With a 64-bit block, output quality degrades after roughly 2^32 blocks, following the same birthday reasoning that applies to other block sizes. Triple DES is now deprecated, so the design survives mainly as a lesson.
