A Mac program that fused Archie search with an FTP client, so you could find a file and fetch it from the same window.
Before the web the hard part was rarely downloading a file; it was knowing where it lived. Archie indexed the contents of thousands of anonymous FTP servers, but you queried it over telnet or email and got back a list you then had to copy out by hand. Australian programmer Peter N. Lewis released Anarchie as shareware in 1993: type a filename, get the hits in a list, double-click to download.
The name was a pun on Archie and a fair description of the internet at the time. Once the web took over the job of finding files, the program carried on as a plain FTP client and was eventually renamed Interarchy — partly because "Anarchie" played badly with corporate buyers.
