Algorand
A blockchain founded by Silvio Micali that picks block validators by cryptographic lottery rather than by burning electricity.
Micali founded Algorand in 2017 and mainnet launched in 2019. The protocol is pure proof of stake: each round, every participant privately computes, using a verifiable random function, whether they have been drawn onto the committee. Nobody knows in advance who will vote, so there is no one to bribe or knock offline before the vote is cast. The committee then runs a Byzantine agreement, and a block is final immediately rather than "probably final after six confirmations" as in Bitcoin.
That is an unusually high number of Turing laureates per transaction. Whether that decides a blockchain's fate is another matter.
