OpenAI and Stripe's open protocol that lets an AI assistant complete a purchase with a merchant without the customer leaving the chat.

It shipped in September 2025 alongside Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, which let US users buy from Etsy sellers mid-conversation, with Shopify merchants promised next. ACP specifies how the assistant fetches a cart from the merchant, shows it to the customer and passes the payment details along. The merchant stays merchant of record and decides whether to accept the order. In other words, the buyer is never OpenAI's customer in the transaction.

The card number does not travel onward. Stripe instead issues a shared payment token, scoped to one merchant and one amount, so a leaked token is useless for anything else. The spec is open and not tied to Stripe, though it is hardly a coincidence who wrote it.
