A San Jose load-balancer vendor that does very nicely out of the world running short of IPv4 addresses.
Lee Chen, a co-founder of Foundry Networks, started A10 in 2004. The AX series and later Thunder were application delivery controllers in the same bracket as F5, but A10 carved out its own market in carrier networks: CGNAT, where thousands of subscribers share one public address because the IPv4 pool ran dry. The longer IPv6 took to arrive, the better business got.
The early years were messy. Brocade, which had bought Foundry, sued A10 and Chen in 2010 over trade secrets among other things, a jury sided with Brocade in 2012, and the case was settled the following year. A10 went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2014.
