4mat
British musician Matthew Simmonds, one of the people who turned chip sound into a style of its own on the Amiga.
The Amiga could play recorded samples, so why write music that sounded like a C64? The answer was size. A cracktro or intro had a few kilobytes to spare for music, and from the early nineties 4mat became a master of modules in which tiny single-cycle waveform loops stood in for real instruments. The result is the Amiga chiptune sound many people picture when they hear the word.
He later went on to write game music but never left the scene, releasing on everything from the C64 to newer platforms. His tunes fill a sizeable corner of The Mod Archive and work as a textbook on how much melody fits into a few hundred bytes of sample data.
