SGI's window manager on IRIX, an extended descendant of Motif's mwm that became the visible face of Indigo Magic.

The name comes from SGI's IRIS 4D workstation line, and the foundation was mwm from Motif. SGI kept the behaviour but gave the frames its own look and added what mwm lacked, multiple desks among them. When Indigo Magic arrived with IRIX 5 in 1993, 4Dwm was what drew the windows, the icons and those unmistakable borders.

Being mwm underneath meant Motif applications behaved as expected and most resource files carried over. It is the same recipe dtwm followed in CDE: take mwm, bolt on what you need, rename it. 4Dwm went away with IRIX, though nostalgic users have rebuilt its look in free themes.
